We’ve been shortlisted…

We’re over the moon to have been shortlisted for the Dorset Business Festival Awards! Plugged as ‘Celebrating Excellence in the Dorset Business Community’, it is an honour to have reached the final three in our category.

The award we have been shortlisted for is the ‘Environmental Impact Award’; this award celebrates a business leading the way in cutting its carbon footprint and impact on the environment through innovative sustainable business practices.

Learning:

We had  many topics to cover in our submission, we discussed our ‘Suttles Setting Standards’ workshop. This is attended by every Suttles employee and aims to help with our culture of behavioural safety. One of the many things we talk about is the three pillars of sustainability and how this can relate to not just their working life but home life too.

EV’S, Plant and Machinery:

We also talk about the more practical side of energy reduction, we have a high percentage of electric vehicles and hybrid vehicles, as well as having converted our crusher at Swanworth Quarry to electric. We have had solar panels installed at both our Swanworth Quarry and our Dawkins Road site.  We also strive to invest frequently in new plant and machinery, as the newer machinery generally benefits from improvements made in terms of their efficiency and carbon emissions.

Processing Material on Site:

At every opportunity on our sites we screen material on site to be re-purposed instead of bringing in new material. A great example of this was at our Langport Embankment site, through processing the material there on site rather than bringing in new material we saved 489.25 t/CO2e! That is the equivalent carbon that would be used if 250 passengers took a return flight from London to New York! Wow!

Our submission included our work on our environmental strategy and policies as well as our cabin footprint measurement and target-setting. We look forward to updating you with more of our carbon saving initiatives in the future!
