Supporting Biodiversity
Responsible quarry restoration also creates valuable opportunities to support biodiversity and enhance local habitats. Swanworth Quarry is located within the Dorset National Landscape and borders the South Dorset Coast Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), making careful environmental management especially important.
The aim of the restoration programme at Swanworth Quarry is to extend the area of limestone grassland that exists within Hill Bottom and the surrounding valley, significantly increasing the extent of this rare and important habitat.
Although it will take many years for the vegetation to fully develop into a mature grassland community, the re-vegetation programme carried out within the original quarry has already provided an important head start.
By carefully managing restoration and habitat creation, we are proud to play a positive role in supporting local wildlife, encouraging biodiversity and creating landscapes that benefit future generations.

Recycling Aggregates & Reducing Waste
Recycled aggregates are becoming increasingly visible within the construction industry, helping to reduce landfill waste and conserve natural resources. Materials such as concrete, hardcore and demolition waste can often be processed and reused in future construction projects rather than being disposed of.
At our licensed recycling facility at Mannings Heath Road in Poole, customers can tip suitable inert materials with us (more information here), which are then carefully processed and recycled to create our recycled Type 1 aggregate.
By recycling these materials, we help support a more circular economy while reducing the environmental impact of construction and demolition activities.

Improving Fuel Efficiency & Reducing Emissions
Improving fuel efficiency and reducing emissions is another important part of sustainable quarrying, and at Suttle Stone Quarries we continue to invest in cleaner, more efficient technology across our operations.
While the quarrying industry has historically relied heavily on diesel-powered and hydraulic plant machinery, we have been actively working to reduce our environmental impact for a number of years. This has included installing solar panels across our sites and transitioning much of our van and car fleet to electric vehicles.
One of our biggest sustainable quarrying developments is at Swanworth Quarry, where we have invested in a brand-new fully integrated electric processing plant. Previously, the production of our limestone aggregates relied on separate crushing and screening units powered by a combination of diesel, electric and hydraulic systems. This new upgrade has replaced these standalone units with one streamlined electric system, eliminating diesel use within this part of our operations.
This investment marks a major step forward in reducing our carbon footprint, with the new plant expected to cut emissions by nearly 130 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent every year.
