Case Study

While the quarrying industry has historically relied on diesel-powered and hydraulic plant, Suttle Stone Quarries has long recognised the need to reduce our environmental impact. Over the past few years, we’ve continued to make meaningful progress; installing solar panels across our sites and transitioning much of our van and car fleet to electric vehicles. These steps represent important milestones, but our commitment to lowering our carbon footprint goes much further.

At Swanworth Quarry, the production of our high-quality limestone aggregates currently depends on two separate pieces of plant using a combination of diesel, electric, and hydraulic power. Understanding the environmental implications of this setup, we have been working towards a complete shift to fully electric processing.

Thanks to recent grant funding, we are now able to take a major leap forward. We are investing in a brand-new, fully integrated electric processing plant that replaces the existing standalone crushing and screening units with one streamlined system. This upgrade; previously out of reach due to capital costs, will eliminate diesel use within this part of our operation.

The environmental benefits are significant. We expect to reduce emissions by nearly 130 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent every year, contributing to our long-term sustainability targets and supporting the wider transition to low-carbon construction materials.

This development also comes at an ideal time. With the opening of the Swanworth Quarry Extension securing the site’s operational future for the next 25 years, investing in cleaner, more efficient technology ensures that both immediate and long-term environmental gains are realised.

At Suttles, we remain committed to delivering high-quality, reliable stone products while leading the way in responsible, forward-thinking quarrying practices. This latest project shows how innovation and sustainability can work together to benefit our business, our community, and the environment.
