We were privileged to be part of a special community project in Swanage: the creation of a stone plinth for the Trevor Chadwick Memorial Statue. The statue, a striking bronze sculpture by local artist Moira Purver, honours Trevor Chadwick’s extraordinary role in helping rescue children from Nazi-occupied Europe as part of the Kindertransport initiative. The memorial now stands proudly beside the Trevor Chadwick Playground, serving as a lasting tribute to his courage and compassion.

Our role in this project was to produce a bespoke stone plinth that would not only support the bronze statue but also complement its aesthetic and the surrounding public space. The choice of stone was crucial to the project’s success, and after careful selection, a piece of high-quality Purbeck stone was chosen for its timeless character, local provenance, and durability in an outdoor coastal environment.

Once the stone was prepared, we used our CNC router to carefully engrave the lettering onto the face of the plinth. The engraving included Trevor Chadwick’s name and the name of the sculptor, Moira Purver. Precision was essential to ensure the text was clean, legible, and appropriately proportioned to the scale of the statue and plinth.

The completed plinth was installed on site and now forms a vital part of the memorial, raising the statue to a prominent position where it can be fully appreciated by the public. It also provides essential historical context through the engraved details, connecting viewers to both Trevor Chadwick’s story and the sculptor behind the work.

This project was a rewarding experience for our team, combining traditional stone craftsmanship with modern technology to contribute to a meaningful and lasting piece of public art. We’re proud to have played a part in commemorating a local hero and supporting a project that holds great significance for the Swanage community.
