We were honoured to be involved in the materials used for the wonderful Cancare Sanctuary Garden in Swanage. The Sanctuary Garden is a thoughtfully designed space intended as a place of peace and reflection for those affected by cancer, whether personally or through loved ones. This meaningful project provided us with the opportunity to contribute natural, locally sourced materials that would complement the garden’s calm and restorative atmosphere.

A key feature of our involvement was the creation of a bespoke entrance stone that welcomes visitors into the garden. Crafted from a hand-selected piece of Purbeck stone, this striking piece serves both as a marker and as a symbol of strength and resilience. As with our Nottington Park project, we used our CNC router to carefully cut a flat face into the natural stone, providing a suitable surface for the chosen inscription.

The lettering itself was also produced using our CNC router, a hand-drawn plan of the text was provided to us and we inputted this into our CAD software for the router, ensuring precision and consistency, before being meticulously hand-painted by our skilled team to create a crisp, clear finish. The choice of typeface and paint colour was made to be understated and respectful, in keeping with the tranquil setting of the garden.

In addition to the entrance stone, we supplied several solid blocks of Purbeck stone to be used as seating throughout the garden. These natural stone benches were chosen for their durability, tactile qualities, and ability to blend seamlessly into the landscape. Their organic shapes and textures offer visitors a comfortable place to pause, reflect, and enjoy the serene surroundings.

We also provided Purbeck stone paving to form the pathways that gently guide visitors through the garden. The subtle variation in tone and texture of the stone helps to soften the hard landscaping, complementing the planting scheme and enhancing the natural feel of the space.

This project was a rewarding experience for our team, allowing us to contribute to a space designed to offer solace, support, and quiet moments of reflection. The use of local Purbeck stone not only grounded the garden within its Dorset setting but also added a timeless, enduring quality to a place created for generations to come. The garden was designed by award-winning garden designer Michelle Brown and brought to life by Wycliffe Landscapes.
