Paving & Landscaping at Sandbanks

What began as a modest landscaping commission soon grew into one of Suttle Purbeck Stone’s most striking showcase projects, a stunning installation at a new development of nine luxury flats on Evening Hill, Sandbanks, with sweeping views across Poole Harbour to Brownsea Island.

Suttle Purbeck Stone, based at California Quarry in Swanage, was first approached by Woodmace in the summer of 2015 to supply stone for a single landscaping feature in the grounds of the high-end development. But after a site visit from Quarry Manager Nick Crocker, the scope of work expanded. By the time the plans were finalised, Suttle’s role had grown to include materials for steps, pathways and the landscaped garden area, all carefully designed to complement the development’s coastal setting.

Nick met on-site with Woodmace, main contractor Colmar, and landscape architects Camlins to agree a practical and attractive solution. The site was cleared and prepared for installation, and huge feature stones, each weighing around 1.5 tonnes, were lifted into place by crane with precision.

“It went fantastically well,” said Nick. “Colmar then discussed other elements of the job with us, including the hard landscaping.” The new order included curbs, treads, riven paving, textured paving and sawn coping – the finishing stone along wall tops to shed water. By the end, Suttle Purbeck Stone’s involvement had grown to more than four times the size of the original brief.

“Nick did this by identifying the needs for the whole project and showcasing our product range to the customer during their quarry visit,” explained Company Director Matt Suttle. “By demonstrating we could supply a start-to-finish solution, he turned the initial enquiry into a substantial multi-product contract, providing several months of work for our sawn workshop.”

“The landscape architect liked it once the feature stones were in and wanted more of it. We do quite a bit with Suttles, and they provided a good selection of materials on time and to the satisfaction of the client.”
