Gravel Hill Carriageway Maintenance Works
Customer – Mildren Construction
Project duration – 3 weeks
When – August 2016
After cracks appeared in the A349 carriageway – a major arterial route, vital maintenance work was undertaken at Gravel Hill, Poole, to stabilize the embankment.
Suttle Piling was tasked with installing 12m Larssen steel sheet piles.
The team overcame an on-site ecological issue, and were still able to deliver the project on budget and ahead of time.
Suttles installed more than 250 of these piles, successfully retaining the embankment during what was a high profile scheme.

Our team used three pieces of plant equipment for the job – an RTG RG16T telescopic leader rig (to drive in the sheets), and a Movax SP70F4 side grip rig (to lift and pitch the piles into place). Later, we deployed a Movax DH20 hydraulic impact hammer to re-drive piles in an area where a tree canopy prevented use of the taller leader rig. Pitching with the Movax side-grip dramatically raises productivity – a key to our shortened program on these time-critical works.
