School Visit to Swanworth Quarry

Yesterday Simon, our Director of Quarrying, took a school group of year 7 geography students on a tour of Swanworth Quarry.

It was the first time in well over a year that we had been able to welcome a school group back into the quarry, something we have missed.

The tour covered many aspects of the quarry and the quarrying industry including:

● Geology

● History of Swanworth Quarry

● Blasts

● Restoration

● Process from the stone that has been blasted into different types of stone aggregate.

Whilst walking around the quarry we were also lucky enough to spot 2 sparrowhawks, a butterfly, a hare and a deer! That’s a lot of wildlife in just 1.5 hours. The restored areas create an environment that is perfect for all sorts of wildlife and their habitats. The pupils really enjoyed the tour, and particularly enjoyed getting a close up look of the dumper and loading shovel in action.
