Duration: Initially a series of weekend railway possessions and then a 12-week period of permanent remediation works.

The project aim was to stabilise the embankment slip that had occurred due to the saturated ground and steep embankments at the country end of Yeovil Junction Railway Station in Somerset.

Suttle Projects were contracted to make the railway safe in the short-term by installing short sheet piles at the top of the embankment using a piling attachment mounted on a road rail excavator.  Then we gained access, via the fields below, to the foot of the embankment, to install longer sheet piles, with grouted soil anchor ties, and gabions as secondary retaining structure.

At this location there was a watercourse, the River Yeo, where we installed scour protection along the bank to protect the embankment from scour.  This was achieved in an environmentally sensitive way to promote biodiversity by using rock rolls, coir matting and planting.

Constructed Gabion baskets on the former piling mat and a re-grade completed the works.
