The works at Lucas Road in the Port of Poole arose at relatively short notice.  The prospect of a 31st October no deal Brexit led to the allocation of Central Government funds to ports across the south coast to build additional resilience in the handling of export and import goods, to and from mainland Europe.  This allocation amounted to £250K for Port of Poole. 

Suttle Projects were commissioned to complete a new area of design and build lorry compound, and to design a new car park adjacent to the harbour office, to facilitate this improvement. 


Lorry Compound
: Utilising our own inhouse design capability, we detailed lorry parking to accommodate 44-Tonne compliant articulated trucks, but also to allow for the use of a 77-Tonne axle cargo handling unit.  The design accommodated improvements in drainage to a previously redundant area, capping, sub-base and bitumous surfacing, as well as kerbs and barriers to enclose and properly tidy the area.  The design work was completed at short turnaround during a two-week period.  It incorporated specialist geogrid materials to make the most efficient use of the available subgrade. 

The construction period was then able to begin before full detailing of ancillary items such as barriers and street furniture had been finalised.  The work involved a team of eight Suttle operatives and staff working intensely over a six-week period to meet the Port Authority’s demanding deadline.

Car Park: Utilising Autodesk Vehicle Tracking software, our in-house design team were able to maximise the space available to create a car park for approximately 40 vehicles.  First of all, we excavated the existing base and resurfaced with bitumous surfacing, then we installed Armco vehicle collision barriers, bollards and signage.  Line painting, using thermoplastic road marking paint completed the work.
