This project was to reconstruct the ballast storage compound at the Port of Poole, supplying and installing ‘Legato’ precast retaining wall blocks to an agreed specification and layout.

Suttle Projects were contracted to carry out this work, under a NEC 4 Option A - Short Contract.

The scope was that an existing retaining wall was removed and the site cleared of all debris, to facilitate the breaking out of the existing concrete slab floor. Once cleared, work began on reinstating the concrete foundation footing, to high tolerances necessary for the founding of the Legato block system.

Precast concrete blocks were delivered on a series of flat-bed articulated lorries. Blocks were unloaded with a suitable tracked excavator and proprietary lifting accessories.

The precast concrete block supplier produced retaining wall design calculations that underwent design checking by Suttles’ in house design team. Suttles were able to verify suitable ground bearing pressure for the subbase and slab foundation.

The works were completed within the programme constraints, to a high standard.
