Pegasus Life, Seaford Piling

Pegasus Life, in Seaford, was an assisted living apartment block for senior citizens, which was constructed on the land of a derelict warehouse. In order for the construction to go ahead, a contiguous wall, alongside multiple bearing piles, needed to be installed and Suttle Piling were contracted to carry out this task.

The contiguous wall was required to protect the road and surrounding buildings, after a lower ground level was exposed from the excavation stage in the construction plan.  The wall was installed using a Woltman 4019 D piling rig.

To maximise the space of the site, some of the piles were installed as little as 600mm from the surrounding buildings. The piles were installed by continuous flight auger (CFA), which involves a rotating auger penetrating the surface and then drilling down.  At the required depth, concrete was pumped into the pile as the auger was lifted.  The auger comprises of a hollow stem, to feed the concrete, around which a steel helix is attached. When the pile was full, a reinforcement cage was lifted, and then lowered into the concrete pile.

The same method of drilling was used for the installation of the bearing piles.  Bearing piles were necessary to provide structural loading stability. These were installed at various depths depending on the load capacity of the design, and were set to the node points of the new building foundation.
