The Mill Yard Northern Access Improvement Scheme aimed to improve the pedestrian and cyclist access to and around Chelmsford Railway Station.
Suttle Piling were contracted to carry out three elements of this project which involved supplying and installing as follows:
- temporary works steel sheet piles, using a Leader Rig;
- a Seacant piled wall that doubled as both a bridge abutment retaining structure and a bearing pile structure for the bridge itself.
- other contiguous pile walls to form wing walls to the bridge.
The most critical Secant pile element was completed using a concrete cast guide wall with polystyrene formers and a large CFA rig to complete the male and female piles. The Secant piles were 900mm diameter, drilled to a maximum depth of 21.5m.
