Lucy’s Bridge, between Haywards Heath and Wivelsfield railway stations, required work to remedy the wing wall distortion and arch fractures that had occurred. This structure was built through a railway embankment with the extrados of the arch being 3m below the rail level above.

Suttle Projects were contracted to carry out the repairs, which comprised:

  • Stabilising the four wing walls and spandrel walls by installing 60 6m long Duckbill ground anchors and steel pattress plates.
  • Stitching and grouting the face cracking using stainless steel helibars.
  • Stitching and grouting the vertical crack.
  • Countering the ring separation at both elevations by stitching radially from the arch intrados. This also addressed the movement to the small sections of spandrel walls between the arch and the wing walls.
  • Brickwork repairs, including the re-bedding of the copings on the wing walls.

Provision was made throughout the works for continued vehicle and pedestrian access.
