Suttle Projects were contracted to carry out the repairs to this listed and very extensive historic monument, after a successful smaller project, at the same location, previously completed earlier in 2019. The scheme involved many elements, but the bulk of works were approximately 12km of repointing to ashlar masonry and brickwork, all completed in specialist lime mortars, as specified and monitored by Historic England.

Also involving some Portland Stone, and handmade brick replacement, the scheme was tendered and won through an innovative floating scaffold approach as an alternative to a suggested plan of draining the Long Curtain Moat for land access.

We were able to deploy extensive experience in stone and masonry issues, from our sister business, Suttle Stone Quarries. This, combined with Suttle Projects’ expertise as an inshore marine contractor, allowed us to offer an efficient and competitive solution to our client.

We provided in house marine stability calculations for deployed pontoon systems.  Great care was taken to ensure that none of the works impacted negatively on the surrounding environment.  Biodegradable hydraulic oil was used in the machinery and, where required, the removal of moss and algae was done by eco-friendly pressure washing.

The defence structures and paths remained open throughout the works and Suttle Projects were required to take appropriate precautions to protect the public.

Further works have been instructed in the spring of 2020, to be completed in conjunction with the large Southsea Flood Defence Scheme.
