DNAire Fish Pass Schemes
Suttles are working in partnership with the Environment Agency and Aire Rivers Trust to deliver the “Developing the Natural Aire” project, or DNAire. This is a flagship project with the ultimate objective of restoring iconic Atlantic Salmon populations to the River Aire, and re-connecting local communities with their river. The installation of fish passes on four weirs, will remove the last major barriers to migratory fish movement between the North Sea and Gargrave, opening up the river to salmon and coarse fish such as dace, chub and barbel, for these and other species to move freely up and down the river to find the best places to feed, breed and shelter. The project sees Suttles providing work placements from colleges and universities in Bradford and Leeds. This has a dual-purpose; to promote STEM subjects to local young people as STEM ambassadors and, through these placement students, they will in-turn visit local schools to promote engagement of young people with the River Aire and its ecology.
