Botley Landslip
Duration: Emergency 4 weeks/Enhancement project 5 months
After torrential prolonged periods of rain, the embankment suffered a large-scale collapse closing the operational railway between Eastleigh and Fareham.
As supply chain specialist sub-contractor to Osborne, Suttle Projects were tasked with carrying out the following works at Botley:
- Installation of 1 mile of access road.
- Excavation and muck away of 35,000 tonnes of saturated material with the disposal element provided by our colleagues at Suttle Stone Quarries.
- Installation of over 1800 Larssen sheet piles in various lengths with leader rigs and Movax units – the piles were driven down to prevent any further movement of the earth.
- A support system of heavy Macalloy tie rods and walings between sheet pile walls over the critical failure section.
- Backfill exceeding 40,000t of crushed aggregate levelled in 150mm layers.
- Installation of over 1,000m of drainage to enhance the stability of the completed embankment.
The collaboration between designer, contractor and Suttles brought the opportunity to install much-needed drainage along the toe of the embankment.
We provided specific work package plans and associated task briefings to detail individual tasks and associated risks. We provided lift plans for lifting operations. We were involved with the close call and improvement opportunity reporting system.
The railway was opened a week earlier than originally anticipated. The ever-changing work scope required a strong interface between designer, main contractor and Suttles – especially with regard to the extent of sheet pile lines and drainage layout. This was achieved by having a constant management presence on site from all parties.
