Suttles Signs up for Professional Competence Training
12 drivers from Purbeck-based stone merchants Suttles are taking part in a new training initiative. The Drivers Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) is a vocational qualification that was introduced for large goods vehicle (LGV) drivers on 10 September 2009 across the European Union, to maintain high driving standards and improve road safety.
All professional LGV and PCV drivers are required to undertake 35 hours of periodic training every 5 years. The first group of Suttles' drivers have currently completed their first year's training and are being put through their paces by Winfrith-based Driving Force Training - one of the South West Driver CPC Approved Periodic Training Centres.
Suttles' shipping manager Paul Bush said, "Our drivers are key to our business. We always make sure that we are doing all we can to ensure not only their safety but also the safety of the general public. Well trained, courteous and aware drivers are crucial, so we're proud that we're taking part in this initiative to maintain our already enviable standard of drivers. We're aiming to have all our drivers complete their training by the end of October."
Local Stone Merchant Takes on Commercial Trainee
Isle of Purbeck and Poole-based Suttles has recently taken on Matt Suttle as a commercial trainee within the group. Initially Matt will be based at Suttles' Tower Park depot and will be learning about the company's range of activities as well as getting to know Suttles' established clients. It is intended that his role will develop into that of a commercial manager for both Suttle Stone Quarries and Suttle Projects activities.
For the last 3 years Matt has been studying Real Estate Management at Oxford Brookes University. This is a property development based course covering several different aspects of the industry including surveying, building construction, property investment and valuation. The course had a specific focus on sustainability across these subjects and was practically based, constantly keeping up with the changing market place.
Suttles' office manager, Sue Holland commented 'It's great to welcome Matt Suttle into the team. We look forward to teaching him the Suttles' ropes, introducing him to clients and working with him to enhance the Suttles brand further.'
Suttles Provides a 'Greener' Collection/ Delivery Service
Suttles was handpicked by the Department of Transport to undertake its SAFED (Safe and Fuel Efficient Driving) course. As a result of the training, local company Suttles has reduced harmful CO2 emissions by improving their fuel efficiency on average by over 7.5%, providing a 'greener' service.
Twelve drivers from Suttles took part in the one-day training course involving a mix of classroom and on-the-road tuition. The course shows drivers that with improved driving techniques, such as better use of gears and brakes and improved planning, that both fuel efficiency and road safety can be significantly enhanced. The SAFED Aggregates driver development programme has been immensely popular over the past 2 years, assisting some 5,000 truck drivers from within the aggregates sector.
Suttles' shipping manager Paul Bush commented 'it's amazing how changing gear less often, reading the road ahead more and slightly reducing speed can make a big difference to lowering fuel consumption and cutting down on CO2 emissions. We're already proud of the quality of our drivers, but are delighted that we can offer a 'greener' delivery service through the techniques learnt on the SAFED course. All the drivers have been pleasantly surprised by the useful tips they've picked up on the course, and will now be using them in their daily deliveries.'
