Suttle Projects Install a Hydro Electrical Power Generation Scheme at Iford Manor in Bradford-on-Avon for Potential Energy
Suttle Projects won a contract to work for Potential Energy to install a hydro electric power generation scheme at Iford Manor in Bradford-on-Avon, running the estate properties on sustainable power. The project started summer 2011 and Suttle Projects carried out all the piling and civil contracting work over a 10 week period. Suttle Projects built a cofferdam around the civil works to keep the site dry whilst the work was carried out, building temporary bridges across the stream to ease access and sheet piling.
Managing director of Suttle Projects, Joe Paine stated "We've worked with Potential Energy before on other hydro electric power generation schemes, including one at a listed mill on the Weld Estate at Lulworth Castle. Due to the landscape and stream, access can prove quite tricky on these jobs, although we love coming up with solutions to potential challenges!"

Suttle Projects Invests in New SFA Piling Rig
Suttle Projects have recently invested in a 'Klemm 708' piling rig for drilling augered concrete piles. The piles are typically used to support buildings or retaining walls when excavating the ground. The new piece of machinery enables the company to work on in-situ concrete pile projects for local companies, as well as working on specialist contracts for Network Rail. The piles are speedily installed and can cater for a variety of ground conditions - the machinery is also suitable for restricted access. Managing Director, Joe Paine added 'We believe we're the only company in the local area to offer this service. It's the ideal piece of machinery for us as many of the projects we work on have restricted access, are within confined areas or have other complexities. We're specialists in providing solutions to difficult projects!'
Suttle Projects Achieve Platinum Award as part of the Construction Skills Certification Scheme
Suttle Projects have just qualified for a platinum award as part of CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme). This is awarded to firms with over 75% of their employees registered and certified under the scheme or one of its affiliates. In Suttle Projects' case, over 90% of the team are certified under the scheme and consequently have been awarded the 'platinum award'.
The scheme assesses and certifies competency for a range of construction skills and health & safety along with its affiliated scheme, the CPCS (construction plant certification scheme), which certifies competency in operating plant, machinery and associated skills. The Suttle Projects team have a collection of CSCS and CPCS competency cards and qualifications between them.
A representative from CSCS added 'This is a fantastic achievement and proof of your organisation's commitment to developing a competent workforce able to meet the requirements of your customers, your employees and the construction industry.'
Suttle Projects Achieve Linkup
Suttle Projects gained Achilles LinkUp accreditation in April 2010, giving the company safety-critical qualifications for its work on railway networks. Suttle Projects had its processes and systems thoroughly audited and passed audit to ensure they are fit to work on the railway network as contractors. This also means that Suttle Projects can sponsor its own cardholders (Sentinel system). The accreditation provides a constant measure of competence across the rail industry.
Order for Hydro-Electric Scheme
Having successfully completed several cofferdams in the first phase of the refurbishment of a listed mill on the Weld estate, we have just been awarded the next phase of the project. We will be undertaking work for the installation of a hydro-electric power generation scheme in summer 2010 in conjunction with specialists, Potential Energy. This is to add an asset to the historic mill without the visual intrusion. An Armfield turbine was installed in the mill in the early 20th century, but its operation was noisy and causing disturbance in the newly converted mill, and so a new solution was sought. An Archimedes screw provides a quieter as well as visually attractive and more efficient alternative just to the north of the mill.
Network Rail Scour Protection Awarded
Suttle Projects has been awarded a large project worth approx £400k: 6 scour protection schemes across Southern England including Kent, Dorset and Somerset to start in summer 2010. Six railway bridges in Southern England have been identified where rivers underneath were at risk of flooding and in turn washing out their foundations. Suttle Projects will be putting rock armour in the channel underneath the railway bridge to protect from scour. The length of the project is likely to be around 16 weeks.
